And so the Netflix CEO, Ted Sarandos, made a serious choice for his first story on the silver screen: Beasts of No Nation, a film about child militias in Africa, with a creative team with good traditions (Cary Fukunaga has joined the hot True Detective remains, Idris Elba is a branded star) and their award potential.
It's a real movie and, in my opinion, a pretty good one. The second movie they released was the one in which a donkey explodes on Adam Sandler. Since then, Netflix has won an Oscar, headed straight into Cannes, and spends more than Panama's gross national product on content and the My Spirit Animal Is A Drunk Unicorn Who Stabs Annoying People T-shirt! Today, Netflix is made up of a huge number of movies that are only unforgettable rather than utterly awful. But it has also made some really good movies - as we said, both Irishman and Marriage Story are Oscar action contenders.
