These are words spoken by poet, performer, model, and cross-world vision activist Kai-Isaiah Jamal during the thrilling show that opens for London Fashion Week fall 2021. Discounted down to just pixels, this fashion week looks very different from the usual spectacle that stunned the streets of the city just a year ago, before COVID-19. Gone are the days when editors poise to leap out of the Mercedes-branded London Fashion Week to win seats among photographers, while fashion students dress up to age nine begging for getting a look at the magic at the door. Now everyone has been invited - albeit at home.
Designers and their teams have communicated their collections digitally, and with the endless opportunities that come with technology, they haven't faltered. Both Matty Bovan and Liam Hodges tested distorted reality in playful videos that rework, pixelate, and transform elements in their designs. Emotional musical performances have brought a feeling of closeness to each other. Singer-rapper Nanny performed for Marques’Almeida, while Cktrl composed music for Ahluwalia and The Building Bridges T-shirt, Hoodie, and Sweater! But it was the newcomers who became the winners of the schedule; With an upbeat, youthful energy source, they bring a futuristic aesthetic and further represent London Fashion Week. If London has proven anything this season, it is for all imagination and creativity, the capital is known for its resilience and community at its core.
