A Mom’s Hug Lasts Long After She Lets Go Shirt! I've been in the restaurant industry since I was 16 and became a general manager at the age of 24. I love everyone, the close friendship of the industry and regular people. It just feels at home. A lot of [consumer] coming out [this summer] has already tried our patience. There are absolutely generous and wonderful people who support small businesses. I'm talking about other people who like me won't wear a mask even if I'm talking to you because I'm outside. A pandemic is always in my mind: "Why should I deal with this in a pandemic?" "Don't they realize we're in a pandemic?" Frustration accrues when trying to keep me, my 64-year-old father, who I live with, our group, and other guests safe, while this person or group of people has really little respect. Our health and safety pushed me to this decision to leave.

During the summer, I turned my disappointments into art. It was healed so maybe something beautiful at the end of the day. Once you start using that part of the brain, it will continue to appear. This made me think about what my mom would do. She will say, "What makes you happy?" and [my job] doesn't make me happy. She passed away three weeks before retiring [in 2017]. I am watching the [restaurant] industry change before my eyes and I realize this is the perfect time for me to do something that makes me happy. When the in-house meal started, the GM asked everyone, "Are you still working here?" My immediate answer is no. That is a boundary that I don't want to cross.
