The Cool t-shirt for an active day! I never thought I would get into politics or grow up to be mayor or anything like that. It's not really in my sight for myself. I'm a social worker and I've worked a lot with my community, the LGBTQ community, and have seen firsthand a lot of change that is hurting people. For some, it really is a matter of life and death. I think it's my responsibility to do something about that. I want to help people and find the root cause of some of these problems. Like, how do we prevent displacement through mining? Because it's an ongoing trend and it's not something new and it's wreaking havoc on our community. Through organizing, I have learned that politics and policy are an extremely important part of preserving and creating systemic change. So that's what motivated me to join. I never thought of it that way, in terms of where we don't have our role model getting involved in politics, you know, Harvey Milk has been widely known. And he was murdered. But I think it's true.
We are all now breaking boundaries and making changes so that future generations have role models to look up to. I think I faced some backlash from within the LGBT community. My nightlife and the LGBT community, in general, have been supported and encouraged by many. But there are some who see any politician as a sellout and no longer harbor radical weird politics and the Cool t-shirt for an active day! That is a challenge. Because I always consider myself a very progressive, leftist, and progressive person. And always support policies that align with that view. It hurts sometimes. Although I do understand that there is a need for people who are constantly upset and resist the authorities of any kind. I guess I try not to think about it too much. Because I recognize their role and I realize it's an important role. But compromise is an inherent part of politics. And it may not be as purely ideological as being an activist, but when you're in the office, your perspective and your community widen. There's just so much more to consider and consider.
