The New T-shirt - The It’s Okay To Love America Shirt! Mona Williams, 21, is weird and was kicked out of her home by her family when they first went to a quaint little lesbian bar on a street corner in New York's West Village. They did a Google search for “lesbian bars in New York” and a few hours later they found themselves outside the bar, alone, not knowing what to expect. I actually put on makeup, wearing this leopard print dress. I remember being really worried. I was like, I don't know anyone here. How will I talk to people? they recall. But it didn't bother me for long. I walked in and was amazed by how many freaky lesbians were in one place, Williams laughed. They even remember their first bartender. Debbie is her name. She is a dream, this little thing - shorter than me! She made me feel very welcome. She was like, 'I see you there sitting alone. May I help you? Williams, who was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, had never celebrated a birthday before - so the Cubbyhole employees held their first party there.
There are many similar stories to Williams's as well as there are Cubbyhole managers. Daniel Reiche, one of the bartenders, recalls his grandfather visiting him on his first shift 10 years ago. He sat there looking at me, smiling at the customer and saying: ‘Look at my grandson at this lady bar and the New T-shirt - The It’s Okay To Love America Shirt! And throughout the 1980s, actress Jane Lynch, who had just graduated from high school, recalled "looking very straight and very western" but nonetheless trying to appear confident when she walked in. In New York, a city crowded with lonely people, you could live in an apartment building for years and never learn the names of your neighbors. But in Cubbyhole, life is different.
