The Black Cat Don’t Bother Me Right Meow T-shirt! Karl Lagerfeld and Kenneth Ize have never met. Lagerfeld died in February 2019, days before Ize was selected as a semi-finalist for that year's LVMH Awards, on whom the Lagerfeld jury would sit. It's a missed connection that Ize regrets: He credits Lagerfeld for rekindling his teenage interest in design. But he knew Lagerfeld in a different way. Last June, Maison Karl Lagerfeld announced Ize as its first Black design collaborator. Following delays related to the pandemic, the genderless collection will arrive in stores this week. Ize of the lineup said: “It was very important for me to show where I came from because that was like introducing myself to [Karl]. “Each outfit is based on an African image. But it's also been a growing experience for the 30-year-old Austria-Nigerian. I come from a space where I don't have that kind of structure because I'm not that big, you know, so learning how to be structured from a brand like that is very important.
Ize worked closely with Carine Roitfeld on the collection's campaign. Stylist and Lagerfeld are back - Roitfeld says the first time Lagerfeld shot her was for Odile Gilbert's book Her Style in 2003 or for the Marchesa Casati story for the New Yorker: the same year - so she has a unique POV on the project: “Kenneth has a new sense of color, a new sense of seeing things and The Black Cat Don’t Bother Me Right Meow T-shirt! Karl loves to learn and I think he'll be very excited about the origins of these prints... I think he has a lot of questions for Kenneth. And I think they will laugh a lot together.
