The Chihuahua Lovers Dog Mom Today I Choose You T-shirt! How can we, as a society, prepare for the arrival of Annette? When the film - director Leos Carax's English-language debut - premiered at Cannes this week, critics marveled at its powerful weirdness. Adam Driver plays a comedian named Henry McHenry! Marion Cotillard plays an opera singer! Their talented daughter, the famous Annette, is played by... a wooden puppet? And the story is almost completely seamless, like in Tom Hooper's adaptation of Les Misérables but a lot different. (Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks made the music.) In short, the whole thing sounded like a mess… and we can't wait to watch it a million times. Still, while we wait for Annette to hit theaters next month, why not revisit some of the weirdest entries from the musical film of the past 50 years? From fables to horror to poignant dramas, all sorts of films have effectively turned children's favorites into… well… something else. Here's a compilation of eight of the scariest musicals ever involving celluloid.
You may have heard of The Umbrellas of Rochefort (1964) -Jacques Demy's painterly fusion of young love starring Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo - and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), sequel His follower is more fun (if also more bloody) with Deneuve, his sister Françoise Dorléac, Jacques Perrin and Gene Kelly and The Chihuahua Lovers Dog Mom Today I Choose You T-shirt! But can I also recommend Donkey Skin, or Peau Dane, in which Deneuve plays a princess who escapes her marriage to her father (!) by running away from home in a donkey's hideout? Here, as in two other films, Michel Legrand composed good music improvised. Jacques Demy's wife, the great Agnès Varda, is like her unusual filmmaking, and One Sings, the Other Doesn't - the story of two women, Suzanne and Pomme, who rekindle love their friend in the women's liberation movement after a decade apart—One of her most compelling (and obviously political) accomplishments. If you haven't seen a movie featuring reproductive rights songs, this is your chance!
