I was recently reminded that the rubber rain boots we see everywhere first appeared in her last collection for Céline, sometime before fall 2018. In fact, her three-year absence (roughly the length of time between Chloé and Céline's gigs) was only meant to cement her reputation. One reason why: The entire class of designers she trains is now making an impact of their own: Bottega Veneta's Daniel Lee has worked under Philo's direction, as have up-and-coming names like New York's Peter Do and London's Rok Hwang. This announcement also has broader implications. Since the mid-90s, fashion has been dominated by heritage brands. Philo and her colleagues devised, made large plum companies if sometimes flagged, and spent productive years producing those labels. Philo did it not once but twice. Building a new business as the industry struggles to re-establish itself post-pandemic can prove more challenging, even with her name recognition. But it's worth remembering that Philo's Céline emerged from the 2008 economic crisis, sweeping away the excesses of aughts fashion with confident new minimalism.
If she can leverage those same instincts right now, she has an even larger following to go on. The launch of the Phoebe Philo brand could become a turning point. That she will influence the look of fashion in the years to come seems to be a given, but the model she is establishing - a 21st-century name, a 21st-century brand - may also prove important. We asked ourselves what fashion will be after COVID. Philo may have just provided us with an answer: The 2020s could become the new era of independent companies. It is fitting that Kerby Jean-Raymond will debut her first couture collection for Pyer Moss - themed around the historical inventions of blacks - at Villa Lewaro, the self-made millionaire's estate Madam CJ pioneer Walker. “These are Negro inventions and I wanted to reintroduce them to Blacks, reversing the erasure that might exist — and also to troll a bit,” explained Jean-Raymond after the show.
