The Snoopy Can’t Someone Else Just Do It T-shirt! Recently, I was looking at a friend's Instagram story in which Katy Perry waved to a friend talking across the table and I felt a strange sensation, something I hadn't felt in a while. long. After I watched that video four more times, I realized that what I was feeling was actually FOMO. Just like that, I went from never wanting to leave the house again to believe that everyone was having more fun than I was. During my nightly AA meeting (still on Zoom), I confessed just as much. I was met with nods. I feel bad about being FOMO because I just survived a pandemic. The world is incredibly hard and painful: People are still dying all over the world in a quick clip, Nazis are marching in Philadelphia, buildings are collapsing, people are dying from the heat of hell below the heat dome and I'm obsessing about a party in Europe.
This is not the time for FOMO, I told myself as I stared at this friend's Instagram; This is a time to be grateful that my parents survived the pandemic and that my children are healthy. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and my heart wants to feel bad about how much fun other people are having. I have always worked hard with the secret belief that other people like each other more than they like me and The Snoopy Can’t Someone Else Just Do It T-shirt! When pressed, I can point out the fact that no one has ever served as a bridesmaid for me. And then, I can list every party I want to be invited to in alphabetical order - just kidding, I don't. But there's something particularly scathing about FOMO at this point. The pandemic is over. Of course, it's not really over yet; the Delta variant is more contagious and possibly more deadly than the original strain, and although vaccines can provide protection, there are many areas in the country - and around the world - where vaccination rates are low.
