The Witchy Hair Don’t Care Halloween Messy T-shirt! In March, Nigerian contemporary artist Chidinma Nnoli opened her first solo exhibition at the Rele Gallery in Lagos. The series of oil and acrylic works are solemn and loving, with mainly female figures surrounded by blooming flowers, Romanesque arches, and religious symbols. One painting, titled When Purple Hibiscuses Fall, features a haloed figure staring longingly through a window, one hand resting on her heart. In another piece, Hold Me While We Wait, two young women leaning against each other against a wall are watched by two other characters - apparently older - through an arched window, one of them holding a booklet reads: “We should all be feminists. The exhibition, titled "To Wander Untamed", is Nnoli's symbolic representation of freedom and the idea of women existing outside the confines of social norms. Inspired by the artist's own experience growing up in a conservative Catholic home, she describes the portraits as an allusion to a patriarchal society where religion is used as a tool to oppress and subjugate women.
This series was born out of a poem I wrote when I was 18 years old about living in a religious home where I find it hard to breathe and where my autonomy is stifled, she said. "It's about finding yourself and getting rid of all those conditions." For Nnoli, now 23, sharing personal experiences through her art is part of a broader concern with creating a sense of community with other women who encounter similar circumstances and The Witchy Hair Don’t Care Halloween Messy T-shirt! “I hope people find their own pieces in my work,” she said. Nnoli is part of a new film by Nigerian artists working to highlight the diversity of women and address issues affecting women in a predominantly conservative society. In the process, they are challenging the simplistic notions of femininity, gender roles, and sexuality that are prevalent in the country, each doing so through works that come to life.
