The Looney Tunes Tweety Tawt I Taw Shirt! I haven't made a mistake in a long time. Spelling mistakes, for sure. It is possible to overspend. Capricorn friends for a week, absolutely. But the real mistakes? Tangible, potentially life-changing mistakes? Not available. Not since I was 21 and I gave up my veterinary degree to move to New York with a thousand dollars in the bank. Now that I'm about to turn 30, I find myself looking back on the past decade and trying to learn some life lessons. And along the way, I realized that the past seven years have been a slow process of preventing the possibility of mistakes. Today, I can cook. I have a (very bad) car. I hang up my clothes. I no longer have to spend nights rolling between relationships, faking ill to get out of my friend's amateur Shakespeare productions or maximize my overdraft. This is mostly good. It's so nerve-wracking to exist in a web of blatant lies and waiting for an STI test text message to drop every Monday doesn't do anything for my smoking habit. But a little bit of me misses the damn feeling - and learning something in the process.
This brings me to cheating. In a recent conversation with a very smart, very classy divorced friend of mine at the Martini in Claridge's, we had to discuss a new phase in which I entered his relationship: a common thing called the morality of non-monogamy. My friend, who was both a cheater and a charlatan in many marriages, scoffed. Why should it be ethical? What happened when hiding in a closet, collars covered in lipstick, breathless meeting in the darkest part of the restaurant? It has been operating for centuries. It's easy to explain her point, citing many famous love doctors or sex experts-or even the third season of Sex and The City, and that lunch between Carrie and Natasha and The Looney Tunes Tweety Tawt I Taw Shirt! Everything in our culture leans towards the idea that cheating is bad. And I agree, for the most part. I agree that we should try to be as honest with each other as possible. But the more I think about my friend's outrageous opinion, the more I realize I agree with it. Now, for the record, I have never cheated. However, I have been cheated on twice, and two people I love very much. But not once did the cheating end the relationship. See, I grew up with the deeply naive view that cheating always has to be dumping.
