Skeleton Diabetics The Only People Who Take Drugs To Avoid Getting High Shirt! Michaela Coel made history at the Emmys last night. As the first black woman to win Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series, Coel received a well-deserved award for her powerful and personal drama, I May Destroy You. To celebrate the evening's spirit and the continued success of her breakout series, Coel chose an Emmys that are bright, bold, and flighty. Her Christopher John Rogers-designed dress was a breath of fresh air and from the moment the designer presented her sketch, Coel stylist Zerina Akers knew it was something special. “Feeling young and bold but still very classy,” Akers shared after the event. "I knew it would take a certain amount of strength to pull it out, and Michaela did it!" For Rogers, the neon bralette adorned with a 6-meter silk organza bow and the matching bodice was seen as a celebration of an artist's prime. “I am truly a fan and admirer of Michaela and her work and am thrilled to have the opportunity to create something for her. I immediately thought of her outstanding features and wanted her to be the center of attention,” he said. “I thought the fluorescent yellow would overwhelm her and was just the idea of something classic, a little different, and a little dramatic.”
Rogers' use of monochrome layering added to that effect. The material of both the shirt and the skirt is tactile, hand-crafted from coated cotton. “I wanted the bedspread and pleats to feel more like paper than Grecian,” explains Rogers. “[For them] has an air of politeness while remaining intentional and statement.” Backstage, Coel prepared her special face for the Emmys by Dr. Barbara Strum and polished makeup courtesy of Bernicia Boateng, mirroring the look's hues with bright yellow eyeshadow and black primer. Instead of opting for the usual gems, Skeleton Diabetics The Only People Who Take Drugs To Avoid Getting High shirts! Akers and Coel opted for a striking, environmentally conscious pair of accessories. “Michaela loves to support sustainable and ethical brands; this time, we chose an unusual combination of gold and pearl Alighieri earrings and paired it with an Anne Sisteron necklace,” says Akers. They bought Sisteron's 14K gold bagel and Alighieri's handcrafted diamond necklace, rose gold ring, and freshwater baroque pearl. The look was dazzling on the red carpet, but it really brightened up the room when it came time for Coel to accept her Emmy. “[Michaela] has made great strides while staying true to herself. She has given a voice to many people who may not have heard, and she deserves a look that honors her,” Akers said. “I was so ecstatic! I am very happy for Michaela. She deserves all the good things that are coming her way.”
