In the early 1970s, Swedish acting artist Ingmar Bergman - who established the success of his home theater with The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Persona in the 1950s and 60s - was in decline. Two of his latest films, 1969's The Rite (1969) and 1971's The Touch, were poorly received; So, reasoning that money for his next movie might be hard to come by, Bergman turned to television media — which was still not the prestigious field it is today. When it premiered on Swedish television in the spring of 1973, Scener ur ett äktenskap didn't feel like last year's Bergmans. It wasn't shot in black and white and its characters weren't mad or struggling with vague beliefs or contemplating (much) about their own mortality. Instead, the intimate six-part series - shot almost exclusively in Fårö, the rocky Swedish island where Bergman has lived for about a decade - traces the contours of contemporary marriage, from contentment to infidelity, bitter divorce, and secret reconciliation. “They are educated and talented. They read all the books,” Bergman said in 1986 of his main characters. “They have all the resources. But they cannot handle the simplest emotional ABCs. "
Scene From A Marriage was an instant hit and garnered the Scandinavian director's biggest international audience to date when it was cut to theaters in 1974. Critics called it the “excited” (The New Yorker); “The brightest, most leisurely film Bergman has ever made” (The New York Times) and even now, its mark on indie filmmakers is clear, from Richard Linklater to Noah Baumbach to Mia Hansen-Løve, whose Bergman Island (set on Fårö) debuted at Cannes this spring. However, neither Scenes From A Marriage nor really any of Bergman's other properties have been remastered for showings until this weekend, when HBO debuts the house's five-part American adaptation. The new series moves Bergman's story from Sweden to Boston, with Erland Josephson's Johan becoming Oscar Issac's Jonathan and Liv Ullmann's Marianne becoming Jessica Chastain's Mira. (In tribute to her predecessor and one-time director, Chastain posted on Instagram a picture of herself and Ullman last November, writing: "There will only be one Marianne. Liv Ullmann is a goddess and I am. love her.")
