Written while Musgraves was in the midst of a divorce, the discovery of love, pain, and self-discovery is boldly confessed. In 15 songs, Musgraves opens up about himself by addressing the realities of relationships, honoring both the thrill and vulnerability of romance. Star-Crossed is Musgraves' most ambitious project to date, existing as both a genre-bending album and an accompanying film, directed by Bardia Zeinali. Filled with saturated colors, a wide range of casual outfits, and plenty of runway fashions styled by Erica Cloud, the surreal visuals add another layer to the experience. Released Friday exclusively on Paramount, this project is unlike anything taken by a country artist, a genre where folksy realism is a selling point. For Musgraves, creating a story that feels authentic is more important than following conventions.
It's not just a one-off music video. “I feel that this story, this chapter of my life, deserves the right portrayal,” she shared via Zoom from Los Angeles. “Music videos are great, but digest them and move on. This is something completely different. I've never been able to devote this much creative space to the visual side of a project before, and I'm lucky to deliver my story in this form. When we started, I was in a place of intense healing, and I knew it took someone special to make this happen visually and The Cow There’s No Such Thing As Too Much Butt T-shirt! Musgraves met Zeinali during a Vogue video shoot a year earlier, and he proved to be the perfect collaborator. An expert in creating music videos that don't live up to expectations - he's the man behind Justin Bieber's Yummy and Troye Sivan's Easy - Zeinali is a natural choice. However, a partnership requires trust. The pair began working on the film while the album was still being worked on, with Musgraves sharing excerpts and ideas as they came to her. Zeinali said there were no albums when we started chatting, only voice memos and song files.
