The color scheme we've chosen with the help of Joa Studholme, color curator at Farrow & Ball, is generally neutral, made up of about a dozen shades across the walls, ceilings and decorated in white, cream, blue, green, and gray colors. Particularity is hell for painters. Seeing it for the first time, the effect is light and layered, can't detect the hard puzzle behind it. There are references to the color of the gray front door throughout the apartment: on the axes of the stairs, the back of the bookshelves, a few interior doors, and cabinets for the original shutters are paneled. I was very nervous about that color, Railing. Abstractly speaking, it seems too complicated. And now, like anyone who makes a bold choice and finds it okay, I've become a public figure for it. Decorating a boot room? Do it in the Railing. A small bathroom? Balcony. We've got some recently made kitchen chairs so guess what color they are. The brass footstool, a private order from Victoria Albert that spent several months in limbo last spring at the UK border, is not too close to the tub (also made by Victoria Albert, you know). I can't say one way or the other about the door handle.
That said, there's a lot that needs to be done or fixed. The shower, a waterfall affair dominated by traditional brass hardware, featuring Perrin & Rowe black accents, didn't seal completely and leaked onto the messy marble slabs they were. I bought it from Mandarin Stone. There was a bunch of missing pipe collars in one of the bathrooms. A stone in the kitchen has not been plastered. The two lights didn't turn on with the bulbs installed, due to a fault in the fixtures and still needed to hang the three pendants. Everyone, including us, forgot to set the doorbell. Two of the most expensive bills are for plumbing and electrical work, which involves removing any old pipes and wires and replacing them. They were redundant during a plumbing overhaul last year, but successive owners have probably lost track of them. It must have felt safer to have a reasonable three times the number of pipes instead of knocking out a working sewer line. But now, most of the canned plumbing is gone, settling on floors, making rooms feel larger and you're less likely to trip over them. Nothing spewed out and the hot water didn't run out. There are new, handsome cast iron radiators we bought from Castrads that boil when they need to and are nice to look at when they don't.
