Even a little before the BLM movement, I started moving forward with the projects I was working on, and I started to find myself working on a different scale than before. The quality of the work I'm doing has certainly taken a drastic turn. The thing is, people, start seeing me do the cover of Vogue, then they see me doing some crazy editorial or campaign, and it just goes on. It's a bunch of work that I'm doing, and I'm showing people that I'm actually more flexible than they think. I remember when I first started. No one wants to hire me. They think I'm just crazy [fantasy] makeup. As if I don't know how to work naturally. There is an assumption that everything will be highly sought after. I think it's always been an assumption with Negroes, that we're just one thing all the time. So just to prove to everyone that I'm not just a one-note makeup artist or anything really growing. I'm showing people that I can really do natural makeup and do it at the highest level. Even with Amanda Gorman's American Vogue cover or my Spanish Vogue cover with Paloma, they're all very different. You have a poet and a model who embody many kinds of my art. In the end, I can say that the MAC cosmetics campaign that I ran was a truly complete campaign for me. I have a relationship with MAC that is very personal.
I've wanted to be their employee for such a long time, and I always tell the story because it's important how I see the job. They won't hire me. I've tried so many times, so many different stores, so many locations. I was young then, so of course, I was very open to everything. In my head I thought, I have to work there. I have never worked there. So when they gave me the opportunity to do this Studio Fix campaign, I was overwhelmed. Imagine growing up and going to the very place you admire to see your own work on display. I have never worked there. Now when I choose the job, I really feel very strong. I don't just do anything anymore. Before I just did anything and everything if I needed to make money. I am always grateful and grateful that I have Ethan, my manager, helping me as I grow. And now I get it. I fully understand the depth of my work. Obviously, as you become an artist, your skillset will grow. You become more talented because you are just practicing and doing the same thing over and over. So I feel like now when I'm working, I'm working with more intent. I don't do it just because it's a job, I do it because I love it. I'm being intentional, even on bad days.
