Love Where You’re From Shirt

Love Where You’re From Shirt! McMahon felt that it was the responsibility of the people who created this waste to recycle and reuse it, so she began to wonder what she could do to reuse these clothes. She called her friend, textile artist Francesca Capone, in November 2020. “Francesca, I have a pack of these 100 pounds of t-shirts, what do we do?” Capone is based in Portland, Oregon, but she had a trip planned to visit Hudson. While there, she and McMahon entered a "self-imposed residence," as Capone describes it, to find out what they could create with a bale of t-shirts. Capone recently spent a vacation with his family, where they worked as pothole men on a small loom. Already answered: Because T-shirts are circular knit, they create circular strips of fabric that are easy to weave on the loom. McMahon, using scraps from his studio, made a super-large loom, and the result: They were able to make an 18-inch x 18-inch woven fabric for a t-shirt.

Creating material that was heavy and puff is no different from quilting or weighted blankets. “The loom is now on sale through LikeMindedObjects for $200,” Capone said. “Textiles have this unique property that it is flexible and can last for many generations. It can continue to be washed, dyed, shredded, and regenerated into something new. I don't believe in textile waste. It is not necessary to remove it. Love Where You’re From Shirt! This is the familiar stuff of a pothole loom, but the jumbo. “What would you do with an 18-inch woven square? McMahon and Capone have some ideas. McMahon, a former furniture designer, said: “We were on the right track when it came to creating upholstered patterns. “It can also become a heavy coat or sweater, blanket or rug.” They hope the loom will inspire not only individuals but larger groups as well. “We were thinking, how can we encourage people to stay at home, use in the classroom, or any kind of community action around small-scale recycling?”
