After a 12-year hiatus, British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng returned to London Fashion Week with a live show last night. “I wanted to celebrate the contribution of black British culture to this country,” he said in a preview of the presentation. Starting in the late 80s and showing his first collection in 1994, Boateng experienced racism in the industry. Fast-forward so far, with the revival of the Black Lives Matter movement and plenty of time to reflect during the lockdown, the designer is feeling hopeful for a change in narrative. “When I made the decision to create clothes, I never talked about the problems I faced, because I didn't want my race to define what I do, especially as a character. the only person of color in the room,” Boateng said. "Now, we're in a world where we can finally have these conversations and that's a great thing."
