Love Boat Rockin The Boat Shirt! I think the curators have chosen pieces that illustrate how [Isabel's] engineering and her cleverness in construction are always evident, her clothes are intelligently created and designed. as well as the structure to 'set it and forget it.' They are just too perfect. done, you don't have to think about them anymore; you can virtually wear them inside out, front to back, and they all work. Isabel always says that she dresses sensibly. The way Isabel really shows emotion in fabrics and in the way things are made. If something is delicate or strong or aggressive or fragile, she likes to show people's feelings. It allows women to continue to express themselves and [to do the same with] herself. So I think that's the highlight. And the idea that we're using Isabel's quotes and some of my writing about Isabel; involves personal notebooks and sketchbooks. We want to learn about fashion, its heights, and beautiful design that are not just technical, it's emotional and it's personal relationships. It feeds the heart as well as the mind. [Fashion] has to live in the world and it has to serve you. I think the reality is that we've been working with costumes from a very early age, whether it's with our fellow performers, like Klaus Nomi, or with choreographers, like Twyla Tharp or Bill T. Jones, we have understood the difference between a dress and real clothes.
Sometimes the outfit can catch the eye, but it's the dress, it's the look, but you can learn a lot from the look that you can then interpret for real life. [But fashion] has to work, Isabel is very conscious of that. It has to be in your closet and you have to want to wear it often. Isabel [also knows how to achieve] those special moments where, yes, you're going to wear this [look] and you want to look great, and you're not going to sit down; She understands that too. Part of the exhibition is my ink work based on Isabel's samples because her patterns still resonate with me. Love Boat Rockin The Boat Shirt! When I look at the pattern pieces… they are these graphic symbols. Sometimes they're like bugs, sometimes they're like personalities or Afro-Cuban saints they're so powerful. The fact that Isabel thinks of her clothes as graphic shapes then becomes elegant, fluid things that follow your body always makes me flutter. So I honor her art of pattern and shape. And that's why Karl calls her a tailor because she can pattern, she knows how to cut the dress, and then she knows how to sew her own, it's a complete cycle. When Isabel makes clothes, she thinks they will last forever, and they will last forever. Many of our customers will send their clothes back if they need repair or rework; that's part of Isabel's service. Whatever we do in our studio is meant to last forever, in her mind, it will outlast us and that's a good way to think about what one makes.
