These are good and necessary words, but are they the best words that our society and industries could aspire to? A better word might be synergy as in, what if people of color were no longer taxed with the fight for a place at the dinner table? Then what can they do with their energy, resources, and talents? What if they could be put together and have an effect greater than the sum of their individual parts? The Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab, the newly announced partnership between Prada Group, Theaster Gates Studio, Dorchester Industries, and the Rebuild Foundation is perhaps the first initiative of its kind to provide answers. answers to such dominant questions. The Design Lab is a three-year program conceived to highlight and advance the work of designers and artists of color. It is the result of a series of serious and intimate discussions between world-renowned artist Theaster Gates and Prada's co-creative director Miuccia Prada, as well as a shared mission to recognize, enhance, and support people of color in all creative mediums. Together they formed a committee that included writer and director Ava DuVernay, late designer Virgil Abloh, and architect Sir David Adjaye. 
The team was asked to identify and nominate people with creative and compelling thinking in color to the Design Lab's first group of awardees. The benefits of the program are partly financial, as it will provide a sizable stipend to each awardee to fund their work and practice. But Design Labs' larger ambition is simply to bring people together. Nice I’m Sick Of Your Bullshit Shirt! Every year for three years, the awardees will gather for the planned annual retreats. They will not only be able to share their work, inspire dialogue, and bridge potential collaborations but will also activate the vast professional, industrial and creative networks that extend across Prada Group, Fondazione Prada, Theaster Gates Studio, Rebuild Foundation. and Dorchester Industries. From over 200 individuals nominated, the team was eventually reduced to 14 inspirational people: Tolu Coker (fashion design), Germane Barnes (architecture), Norman Teague (product design), Kyle Abraham (dance), Mariam Issoufou Kamara (architecture), Kendall Reynolds (footwear), Yemi Amu (agriculture), Kenturah Davis (visual arts), Salome Asega (art, technology, and design), Damara Brown (food art), Maya Bird-Murphy (architecture), Brandon Breaux (fine art and design), Summer Coleman (graphic design) and Catherine Sarr (high jewelry design).
