She says the Harlem spirit has influenced her desire to make the collection broad in terms of inspiration and influence. “Harlem is an area with a lot of cultural influences. It represents the movement for change, renaissance, and refinement,” said Underwood. “It is very reminiscent of who I am. You will see combinations of many different flavors [in the line]. ” In the new collection, you will find the signature Oak & Acorn piece, the whole piece, with springy tones. “It pays homage to farmers, slaves, prisoners, and laborers,” Underwood said of one piece. “We give back 20% of our profits [from coveralls] to We Got Us Now, an organization [for] children and young people affected by parental incarceration.” There are also hand-woven harems in Africa, innovative ao dai in Budan, and denim workwear shirts. “There is always a sense of utility,” she said. Equally important to Underwood's sustainability initiatives in the line is her focus on educating customers about the true history of denim. With Oak & Acorn, she wanted to highlight the history of denim in the United States beyond just being a garment worn by cowboys. “It always comes back to stories like the idea of Western cowboys, James Dean,” said Underwood. 
There aren't many women wearing denim, let alone black women in [the] denim space, so I really felt this story was important to tell." During her research, for example, she noticed that denim has a much more complicated history in the country. “I stumbled across black leather, or slave fabric, which was the first denim fabric in the United States to be used by the slave population,” says Underwood. “Indigo is a concealed commodity of the slave trade. You have to go through the cotton story to get to the denim story.” Other new denim lines, such as the indigenous label Ginew, have also emphasized jeans as a staple in indigenous cultures, promoting the idea that this kind of wardrobe staple. As her brand continues to grow, Underwood hopes to eventually transform the label into a more lifestyle brand, venturing into the footwear, accessories, and even homeware business. “We have great collaborations coming up, pop-up stores, and a meditation album with [musician] Run Child Run coming out in May,” she said. Above all, she sees potential in using her denim as a vehicle for something bigger. Underwood said: “Besides being an artist, I am also a healer. “Being able to have this comprehensive conversation about denim is for us Americans to be able to heal to understand that we all need space to be heard. It's not about the fashion - it's about the message. ”
