Nice the Jill Biden Black Taco You’re A Taco T-shirt! When I was finishing 93Queen, I came across a series of articles in 2017 that really exposed the [maternal mortality] crisis in the media. I read that the United States was, in fact, the most dangerous place in the industrialized world to give birth and that completely let me down. And then I kept reading that black women are dying at three times the rate of white women. I realized that what I went through on a personal level was far worse for Black women. Given my personal experience and skills as an artist, I really wanted to enhance these stories. I introduced the project to Concordia Studio, and I started researching and developing the project, see: Who are the players in the movement? What is the latest? What is happening? And at the same time, I'm looking for a collaborator to really tackle this huge national crisis. I especially wanted to work with a Black woman who could provide a perspective I never had. Then Tonya and I were introduced to each other. I am deeply honored and moved to speak with her and learn of the work she does in the community and country, and her work as an artist. We met for coffee and then actually started dating just a month later. We found our protagonist in Shawnee She issued a call to action on Instagram after her daughter Shamony Gibson passed away. 
She and Omari held an event called "Aftershock", which is the film's title to honor Shamony's life. I saw that Instagram post and immediately called Tonya and said, “I think we need to film this and this could be our starting point. I made a movie called Crisis in the Crib about the infant mortality problem we had in the United States. Knowing that the health of infants and mothers are the hallmarks of a nation's health, it's clear that we all need to be concerned about what's going on. As Paula said, we have met and I am also looking for a life partner. I feel that actually confronting the maternal mortality crisis in the United States requires a team effort. That is a big problem. Nice the Jill Biden Black Taco You’re A Taco T-shirt! When Paula and I met and had our first conversation, the great thing was that we had a common vision for how to tell this story. Neither of us wanted the movie to be a survey movie. We want it to be told through people's lived experiences. We want people to feel and understand what loss is like, and really balance the story with the information we've received from some of our experts. It was really a great match for both of us because we are both passionate, have the same vision, and really want to move this story forward. As Paula said, upon meeting Shawnee, Omari, and Bruce, they were amazing collaborators to work with. So it was quite a trip.
