I really feel haunted by the notion that we live single lives and our characters live single lives, and that's simply my experience. I think there are many parts to this. I think that ultimately, first and foremost, I think of myself as a fiction writer, and therefore I define my job as creating worlds that are as real and intimate as possible, respecting readers who have chosen to spend their time with the world that I am creating. I think there are different ways to erode intimacy, and one of them is through some kind of pretense and protection, right? Many young, paranoid people sometimes indulge that everyone is perfect and should be careful to adhere to absolute moral purity every second. One of the things that I hope the novel type of gesture is about is that everyone is imperfect, and that doesn't make them disposable. Everyone has a deeply specific personal history hidden behind them like jellyfish tentacles, and that personal history has to do with what they politically believe in. 
How we approach disagreement is one measure of our trust in the community. It's hard for me to see this novel separate from Bed-Stuy Strong because both are conceived on the same timeline, just a few months apart. And I think that might actually be one of the reasons why my draft novel wasn't so good and so unsatisfying was that I was surrounded by mirrors of some normal, utopian good muscle. I only saw examples of real solidarity, and I thought, in the midst of all the doom, This is something real. And I know it's real because I'm really immersed in it. I have no interest in writing a novel about mutual aid networks, but I do like it, Is there a way to have this novel in a somewhat conservative and historically conservative form that is usually best suited to tell the story? the story of an individual's self and consciousness not to shift from "I" to "we"? Is there a way to move towards the idea that the world as it is is a created thing, and by that logic can be remade? That's what I'm aesthetically interested in, and that's the journey I try to follow.
