She became the first Native Alaskan to win a House seat. She also became the first woman ever to represent the state and the first Democrat in nearly 50 years. Peltola won her seat through a special election, filling the remainder of Congressman Don Young's term after his death in March. She won thanks to the new ranking system, but the win is historic nonetheless. She secured a rare Democratic victory in the often red country, defeating prominent Republican Sarah Palin in the process. Peltola told Vogue: “I went up against three millionaires, one of whom was an international celebrity. “I was very surprised by the results. The time is just right. [This new voting system] will get us out of the closed partisan primaries, which result in very extreme and sometimes winning candidates. Since then, Peltola has enjoyed an extremely short two-month term in Congress: She has barely had time to fully set up her office, let alone roll out major moves. 
In the House of Representatives, she recognized the work her team had done so far, such as trying to create more jobs, training Alaskans to enter the workforce, and asking Congress for $250 million in aid for The crab fishing industry barely made the top of her to-do list, Peltola said: “The achievements we've seen [so far] are on the House side, they haven't passed it on the Senate side, "They're still in the process of being finalized by the president."In less than a week, Peltola will again be ahead of voters in the midterm elections, hoping to turn her two-month term into another two years. Peltola is running against three non-contiguous state candidates, including Republican Palin and Nick Begich III and libertarian Chris Bye.
