After getting up early for a morning surf session at La Manzanilla beach, I met my mother in Naviva to experience our morning breathing exercise. Our guide, Edgar, led us down a path that led to a beautiful and secluded wooden pavilion perched atop a rocky outcrop with tidal puddles. After practice, as Bart plays an ethereal tune on a steel hand-cranked drum, I hear my mother gasp. I turned to her as she grabbed my arm and pulled me into a tight hug, while two humpback whales charged in the distance. After my mother, my grandmother passed away in the summer, we realized that we needed to make an effort to spend more time together. That's why we both packed our things in Mexico City, she was in a town outside of Atlanta and caught a flight to Riviera Nayarit to meet at Naviva, the newest property to open in Punta Mita, a 1,500-acre private peninsula located along the Pacific Coast.
