Nearly 200 of the world's most influential creative leaders and creative pioneers flocked to WSA, a new cultural hub in Lower Manhattan. In the fading sunset, fans and passers-by gathered to watch the arrival of such luminaries as Anna Wintour, ASAP Ferg, Donald Glover, Edgar Ramirez, and Luka Sabbat. Once inside the skyscraper, attendees crowded into an intimate hallway. Cocktails circulated as predictions built. Suddenly, a surprise fashion show by Yohji Yamamoto began. Models from the Japanese designer's collection descend the escalator, winding in a gravity-defying and hypnotic performance. The presentation set the tone for a night of surprises. Then, the eclectic crowd dressed in tuxedos, jeans, capes, and overalls heads to the 28th floor for a sumptuous dinner. Will Welch, GQ's global editorial director, took to the stage to introduce the award and his mission. The evening has a noble purpose: to celebrate creativity in once-isolated mediums.
All the good things in the creative world happen outside of the old cellars,” says Welch. “Tonight is about how energy is released when you slide through vaults and hit walls.” Fearless creativity connects all the elegant trophy winners designed by David Yurman: 28-year-old Korean model and actress HoYeon Jung; Tim Cook, 62-year-old American CEO of Apple; Donald Glover multi-hyphen; and Gaetano Pesce, an avant-garde Italian designer. Other honorees include Yamamoto, designer Grace Wales Bonner, skater Tyshawn Jones and filmmaker William Strobeck. As was customary for GQ and Welch, the party, despite being filled with giants and tastemakers, maintained needless comfort.
