When creating his designs, Fuse often thinks about what each of the different elements means and how they work together to convey a message. This is especially true in the case of a t-shirt he designed for a fundraiser to assist victims of the Maui wildfire, which has become the deadliest wildfire in the US in more than a century. .
According to Fuse, who grew up in Hawaii before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998, Sumofish started as a passion project. After working as a graphic designer for a few years, he freelanced and founded Sumofish with his wife and business partner Joni in 2002. It started as a handful of Japanese-themed designs, times first sold at a stall at the Nihonmachi Street Fair and later at other craft fairs and festivals as well as some shops, Fuse wrote in an email to AsAmNews. For a few years, we sold at Japanese festivals all over the country from Boston to Hawaii. The vibrant graffiti style of the Sumofish designs grabs attention, and aside from aesthetics, it serves a practical purpose. I like the bold lines and bright colors, especially for the t-shirt art, as it is visible from a distance and feels [it] works well with Japanese themed designs and characters Ban/Hawai’i, Fuse said. Although the fundraising t-shirt pre-sale ended on Wednesday, more t-shirts will be available on the website after the first shipment on September 12. Fundraising decals will continue to be available. 100% of the total Proceeds from the sale of Maui Phoenix t-shirts and decals will be donated to the Maui Strong Foundation of the Hawai’i Foundation, which allocates funds to various areas of need in Maui.
