These are just a few of the creations Cameron Hughes, 28, has made recently. This New York-based designer specializes in high-tech dresses that take you and have a life of their own. He turned them into a hobby before the pandemic but started gaining a lot of followers when he started posting on TikTok in 2020. Now, he has nearly half a million followers on the app. This technical thanks to its one-of-a-kind designs. “I started designing for looks when I went to clubs for fun,” says Hughes. “Then the pandemic broke out and there was nowhere for people to see what I was doing or any specific events to look for, so I decided to show everyone what I was working on. TikTok.” Hughes, who holds a BFA from Syracuse University, uses his experience in sculpture and engineering to design. “I took some technical classes while [at Syracuse], but learned almost everything from YouTube and the producer blogs,” says Hughes. “I actually did some kinetic and interactive sculptures in school. He often shows what goes on behind the scenes of animated spinning dress-making muscle. Many of his followers point out that the designer's job just begs an artist like Lady Gaga to wear them (a client of his dreams) and that he also dreams of dressing someone up. Whatever happens, he intends to take his growing people with him throughout the trip. “I wanted to show the whole process from creating stuff in my studio apartment for silly TikTok videos to launching a brand,” he said. What was your process of creating TikToks? Where did you get the idea from? I film everything I do while I'm designing, sometimes setting up complex shots, shortening time, and using sliders or robotic cranes. For me, it's really important that my videos have a high production value and you can really see what I'm doing and how much work it takes to make something. I get my idea from watching too much TikTok seeing how other creators create engaging content.
Raccoon Valentine’s Day Shirt! Also, how is it created and other processing videos on YouTube? I'm not sure I've defined the style... yet. I just keep doing things when the idea comes to me. I like to look at new technology and other manufacturers' projects to see what kind of components are available. I look at these and think about what I can create with them. I also love to watch archival runway shows and current trends to see what's exciting for everyone in the fashion industry.
