Official, The Flash Dreams T-shirt! The idea for The Crown in Vogue arose, completely unconceived, in late spring 2020 when access to British Vogue's archive of photographs was "things of history", as the magazine once said. Call it difficult. That is to put it gently. Tucked away around a corner in the basement of the Vogue House in London's West End, the British Vogue archive is housed in two rather elaborate rooms, with low ceilings and no air. A smart sliding cabinet system allows for a Tardis-like ability to hold more than they could possibly have. Lined up in rows of old-fashioned file cabinets, like filing cabinets, line up, containing printed envelopes. Most of these are perfectly marked with names and dates from the royal archives of British Vogue.
Along with finding every issue of British Vogue, it came out in 1916, and over the years, there have been 18 months of good research here, and it's starting in earnest. Occasionally, during my long months of research, I was one of the few people who worked in Vogue House, its seven floors eerily empty. The boxes begin to reveal their contents. If the volume is amazing, the quality of it all is also amazing. Cecil Beaton was once a critically acclaimed photographer for British Vogue, who the magazine could truly call it's own. Summoned to Buckingham Palace in 1939 to photograph Queen Elizabeth, the king's consort, a rich and far-reaching career as a photographer began - and British Vogue reaped the benefits.
