The Team Conrad Shirt American Eagle Shirt and the 50th anniversary of the White Marlin Open are coming to Ocean City this summer, as boats and anglers flock to the East Coast in hopes of catching big fish and the money that comes with it. The world's largest fishing tournament has come a long way to become a staple in both local East Coast communities and fishing communities along the East Coast. Founder Jim Motsko has been there every step of the way, helping to lead the league throughout its development. A Baltimore native, Motsko helped establish the league in Ocean City in 1974, with players sporting the East Coast town, which has been dubbed the White Flag Fish Capital of the World. Now, people flock from all over the world to compete for record-setting prize money, or just to witness the massive annual event. Motsko spoke with Delmarva Now recently about the history of the White Marlin Open, the nearly 50 years of the tournament, and what the tournament means to him and his family. This year we're not doing much different than last year, other than letting everyone know that it's our 50th. We have an annual t-shirt design to celebrate our 50th and we have a small icon that we added to our normal icon. And we also have a new entry-level added to specifically celebrate our 50th anniversary, an additional entry level for a $50,000 White Marlin Open winner. And that was the talk of the town. But other than that, we're doing the same thing that we do every year.
I just got back from a two-day promotion trip to North Jersey. and preceded by a two-day trip to the Carolinas and Virginia. We are doing what we normally do and we hope that the weather stays good for the next three or four weeks and the sailfish come out in really good numbers. Well, when you look back and say 50 years, I was 76 years old. Looking back and thinking, Oh my gosh, it feels like I've been doing this all my life. And my kids have been doing it all their lives. They were born in it. So sometimes you sit back and you think about it. But we don't languish on our laurels, let's say. I think we're all amazed that we've managed to do this for 50 years. We started this from scratch and it really wasn't meant to be The Team Conrad Shirt American Eagle Shirt! But with each passing year, we kept doing a little more, and we kept getting more boats, and more bonuses. I think, deep inside, each and every one of us, especially me and my two daughters, it's a good feeling, a very good feeling. Well, we didn't plan it this way, it just kept evolving. It's not like I went to school to learn and learn a business model about how to run a league. Over the years, the tournament was originally set up so I could fish in it and win some money when I caught the most, then use that money to go fishing for sport fishing, at least Especially this kind, very expensive. I have never won any big money in the tournament.
